PRIVACY

Your count stays on your device.

Obsidian Black Ltd operates CountBench. The tool processes your counts, imported files and exports in your browser. There is no account, and nothing you count is uploaded unless you choose to email selected results.

What the browser keeps

With Save on this device, the count is stored in this browser's site storage until you delete it or clear the site data. Anyone using the same browser profile can open it. A Temporary session keeps the count only in memory while the tab is open; it is not written to browser storage, cookies or the address bar. Preparing for offline use stores the tool's own files, not your counts. Delete one or all saved counts from the start screen.

Codes, quantities, locations, site names and operator labels never appear in page addresses, tab titles or file names.

Emailing selected results

If you choose Email me these results, the files you selected are uploaded to the SmartFACT web service so we can email them to the address you verify. We use your email address to send the verification code and your results. Our basis for this is your request. The files are deleted within 15 minutes of the email being submitted or the request being cancelled, and never kept more than 24 hours after upload. A minimal encrypted delivery record is kept for 30 days. Email is sent through our email provider, MailerSend. See emailing your results.

The optional factory question and the news box are separate choices. A news subscription starts only if you tick the box and confirm with the code, and lasts until you unsubscribe. An answer given without subscribing is kept only with the short-lived delivery record. Emailing results does not create an enquiry, an account or a SmartFACT organisation.

Network requests and links

Loading the site retrieves its own pages, scripts, styles and fonts. Hosting providers may record ordinary request details such as IP addresses and paths. Once loaded, counting, imports and downloads need no further requests. Links to other SmartFACT products open only when you select them and carry only utm_source=countbench. No count value is ever placed in a link. The Send feedback link opens our feedback form and carries only the tool's name, its version and the screen it was opened from; leaving your email address there is optional.

Reporting an issue

Report a problem downloads a short diagnostic file containing the build, fixed error codes and broad browser features, with no stock data, codes or file names. Nothing is uploaded automatically. Send it, and anything else you choose to share, through the SmartFACT support form. Use synthetic examples where you can.

Optional analytics

With your consent, we use Google Analytics to understand visits to our pages and the tool. The Google tag stays off until you accept. Rejecting analytics does not affect the tool.

Google receives page views, browser and device details, connection information and cookie identifiers. Our events use fixed names and values only, such as that a count was started or which file format was downloaded. They never include codes, quantities, locations, file contents, file names, query strings or fragments. Referrers are reduced to their origins. When you follow a link to another SmartFACT product or service, one suite_cta_click event records only this tool's name, the destination product and a fixed name for where the link appeared. Advertising personalisation is disabled. Offline use, emails and downloaded files never send analytics.

Your analytics choice is remembered for 180 days in a preference cookie shared across smartfact.ai and its subdomains, including product websites and apps. Use Analytics settings on any site to accept or reject analytics across the suite. Google Analytics cookies remain specific to each host and last up to 180 days. Open pages check for changes; other sites remove their analytics cookies when next opened or resumed. Saving counts on this device and your analytics choice are separate controls.

Google processes analytics data under its own arrangements, which may involve processing outside the UK. Contact [email protected] about your information or to exercise your data rights. You can also raise a concern with the UK Information Commissioner at https://ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint/.
